Studios 2021/22

For 2021/22 AIRS is running 14 full year studio residencies, one as a media arts studio, plus one pilot residency, in a total of 16 elementary schools  in the Vancouver School District. These residencies engage students in diverse projects and explorations that encompasses a multiplicity of different mediums and concepts.  


Full Year Studio Residencies

Artists work one day a week over the course of 24-30 weeks/day sessions over the year with students across the whole school.


Founding and Established Studio Residencies:

  • Florence Nightingale Elementary with artists Rebecca Heyl and Yunuen Perez Vertti.
  • Pierre Elliot Trudeau Elementary with artist Alex Ramirez.
  • Admiral Seymour Elementary with artist Heather Lamoureux. 
  • Sir Matthew Begbie Elementary with artists Rebecca Heyl and Annie Canto.
  • Queen Alexandra Elementary with artist Pia Massie. 
  • Mount Pleasant Elementary with artist Alex Ramirez. .
  • Britannia Community Elementary with artist Tim Bauer and 6wks with Cole Pauls.
  • Thunderbird šxʷəxʷaʔəs Elementary with artist Tami Gail Cline.
  • Lord Beaconsfield Elementary with artists Kirsten Hatfield and Kathryn Wadel.
  • Tecumseh Elementary with artist Julie McIntyre.
  • Chief Maquinna Elementary with artist Parvin Peivandi.
  • Walter Moberly Elementary with artists Alysha Seriani, Rebecca Heyl, Jessie McNeil & Yunuen Perez Vertti.
  • Sir James Douglas Elementary with artists Sandra Sugimoto & Christine Mackenzie


Full year ECUAD/AIRS Studio Residency

A full year residency for community engaged art practice at Mount Pleasant Elementary sponsored in partnership with Emily Carr University of Art and Design open to Emily Carr graduates.


  • Awarded to artists Mickey Morgan & Alex Ramirez.


Full year Media Arts Residency

Artists work one day a week with multiple intermediate classes for 24 weeks with a focus on media arts.

  • John Henderson Elementary with artists Alanna Ho and Christine Mackenzie
  • Sir Graham Bruce Elementary with artists Kristen Voth and Yunuen Perez Vertti


Pilot Studio Residency

Artists work one day a week with 2 or 3 classes for 6 weeks with a focus on Ceramics.


  •   Waverley Elementary with artist Serisa Trinidad Fitz-James.


Mentorship Residencies

A 6 week mentorship opportunity at the inaugural AIRS Art and Discovery Studio at Florence Nightingale Elementary with AIRS artist Rebbeca Heyl  for professional and emerging artists wanting to expand their community engaged art experience into schools.

Land Acknowledgement

The Artist In Residence Studio program is honoured to be working together on the unceded, unsurrendered and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm|Musqueam, Sḵwxwú7mesh|Squamish & səlilwətaɬ |Tsleil-Waututh people, where we learn, live and work. We humbly acknowledge that we are unlearning and relearning and with this acknowledgement comes the commitment to engage in ongoing acts of reconciliation.
